The European Network for Research in Light-Ion Hadron Therapy (ENLIGHT) was established in 2002 to co-ordinate European efforts in radiation therapy using light-ion beams. ENLIGHT was funded as a Thematic Network under FP5 (2002-2005) and was instrumental in bringing together different European partners to promote hadron therapy, in particular with carbon ions. ENLIGHT created a multidisciplinary platform, uniting traditionally separate communities so that clinicians, physicists, biologists and engineers with experience in ions could work together with a common goal.

PARTNER-a particle training network for European Radiotherapy is a FP7-ITN funded inititiative, established in response to the critical need for reinforcing research in ion therapy and the training of professionals in the rapidly emerging field of hadron therapy. This need has particular urgency since two particle therapy facilities will soon become operational in Heidelberg (HIT, Germany) and in Pavia (CNAO, Italy). These are the first dual particle therapy centres to be built in Europe.

PARTNER brings together key academic institutes and research centres of excellence and  the two leading European companies in particle therapy, IBA and Siemens. All partners are known world-wide in the diverse but complementary fields associated with particle therapy: clinical, radiobiological and technological. Thus the network covers a unique set of competencies, expertise, infrastructures and training possibilities.

The context of a new technique and a dynamic research program in an area of great societal demand offers outstanding training opportunities for future careers of the young researchers.

The project aims to train 25 researchers in this field and these positions are described below under  the specific recruiting partner institutes.
